How To Make Gingerbread Houses On A Budget
In this blog post, I’ve come up with two creative and budget-friendly gingerbread house ideas. The Charm Of Gingerbread Houses During Christmas
As a child, seeing a gingerbread house at Christmas always filled me with pure excitement. The colorful candy decorations and the chance to bring my creative ideas to life made it such a magical part of the season. I remember watching the Christmas tree lights reflecting off the sugary rooftop, making the whole house look like it came straight out of a storybook. Even now, as an adult, gingerbread houses still make me feel all wide-eyed and nostalgic. But let’s be honest—building one is no small feat! Getting those walls to stay up takes serious skill (and patience). So, I decided to create these handmade ornaments instead, capturing all the charm without any of the hassle, including one made with wood and another with oven-bake clay, capturing the charm without any of the hassle.
Materials Needed For DIY Clay Gingerbread House Decorations
- Oven-bake clay in warm brown
- Wax or parchment paper
- Rolling pin
- Sharp knife
- Pencil
- Baking pan and Oven warmed to 275 degrees
- White paint pens
- Optional: Ribbon for hanging
- Optional: Glitter and glue (for added sparkle)
- Optional: Puffy Paint
How to Make Gingerbread House Christmas Clay Ornaments
- Lay out a piece of parchment paper on your work surface.
- Using a sharp knife, cut the oven-bake clay block into four sections.
- Sandwich one-quarter of the clay between the parchment paper and roll it flat with a rolling pin. The thinner the clay, the more fragile the ornament will become.
- Use a sharp knife to cut the clay into a house shape.
- With a pencil, create a hole in the house’s roof for hanging. Be sure the hole goes all the way through; you may need to flip the clay and poke from both sides.
- Carefully lift the house from the parchment paper using a sharp knife or small spatula.
- Place the house on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake in a 275-degree oven for 15-20 minutes. Let the ornament cool completely on the pan.
- Once cooled, use paint pens to add windows, doors, wreaths, swirls, dots, peppermint shapes, and white accents to the roof’s edges. Optional: For a touch of sparkle, apply a small bead of glue over the accents and sprinkle with glitter. Alternatively, you can use puffy paint to give your designs a bit of dimension.
- If you plan to hang your Christmas gingerbread house ornament, thread a ribbon through the hole and tie a knot for hanging.
Note: I experimented with using air-dry clay for this craft to speed up the process, by baking it. While this worked fine, I found that the paint pens didn’t perform as well on the clay. The chalky dust from the clay rubs off onto the pen and clogs it, which can ruin the pen. So, keep that in mind if you try this method!

- Miter saw (for cutting scrap wood at a 45-degree angle, if not using pre-cut shapes)
- Wood stain (for a warm, gingerbread color)

- Matte white vinyl
- Weeding tool

However, if you have wood scraps on hand, you can easily craft unique ornaments with a personalized touch. If you don’t have a cutting machine, you can still make these ornaments using a simple method like the one described here. This technique will help you create adorable wooden gingerbread houses or other shapes without needing specialized tools!
How to Make Gingerbread House Christmas Wood Ornaments
- Cut house shapes from scrap wood using a mitre saw set to a 45-degree angle. If you prefer, you can also purchase pre-cut wood house shapes from a craft store or online.
- Lightly brush them with wood stain to give a warm, gingerbread-like color, and drill a small hole at the top for hanging.
- Download the SVG file linked below to create the windows, doors, and trim. Use a cutting machine, such as a Silhouette or Cricut, to cut these shapes from white vinyl. TIP- use matte white vinyl to reduce the reflection from the tree lights.
- Remove the negative parts of the vinyl, then use a picking tool to carefully lift and place each small window and decorative detail onto the gingerbread house. For further guidance, watch the video above.
