How to Add Christmas Tree Ribbon Elegantly
Start by choosing the right ribbon in colors that complement your tree’s theme. Begin at the top, letting the ribbon flow naturally down the tree, using cascading or looping techniques. Anchor the ribbon with small twists and add bows or accents for extra elegance and texture. Below are multiple creative and easy ideas to make your tree stand out beautifully this holiday season.
Ways To Add Ribbon To Your Christmas Tree
Horizontal Ribbon Drape
If you’re wondering how to wrap a Christmas tree with ribbon, the horizontal drape is the classic style to try. Traditionally, this method involved starting at the top and wrapping the ribbon around the tree in a coil. Nowadays, we’ve updated the technique to create a softer, more elegant look with a natural flow—drape the ribbon in loose, horizontal sections for a more polished effect. For extra boogie look try a thin velvet fabric cut into 6″ strips.
Vertical Waterfall with Ribbon
The vertical waterfall is a classic choice for an elegant, cascading effect. Start from the top and allow the ribbon to flow in one continuous strand downward, creating an effortless, dramatic look, resembling a waterfall of ribbon down the tree!
Cascading Ribbon Sections
For an elegant, cascading effect, try the vertical waterfall style with a twist: cut the ribbons into arm-length sections. This saves ribbon and lets you pin each piece in place, making it look as though it’s weaving in and out through the tree branches. Start at the top and allow each section to flow downward, creating an effortless, dramatic look that resembles a waterfall of ribbon cascading down the tree!
Big Bow Cascade
The big bow cascade combines a large, full bow with a single, long ribbon end that flows gracefully down the tree for a bold, statement. To create the bow, form a circle with the ribbon to your desired size, gather it in the middle, and secure it with a zip tie, leaving about 24 inches on the opposite end. Pin the ribbon in place to create billowing, cascading waves along the branches. This technique works best with 3.5-5” wide velvet ribbon; the rich texture adds lots of volume and drama to the tree. It’s perfect if you want a luxurious, full-looking tree without needing many ornaments.
Ribbon Strand Clusters
Add texture and whimsy to your tree with ribbon strand clusters. Gather delicate ribbons in various colors (avoid wired ribbon for this technique) and tie them in the center with a knot or secure them with a cable tie. Place each cluster on a branch for bursts of color that flow naturally with the tree’s decorations, creating a playful, layered look.
Ribbon Loop Strands
This is one of the easiest methods! Cut 12-20” lengths of ribbon and drape them over branches to create a loose, effortless, flowing ribbon accent. Strategically arrange them around the tree to add pops of color and texture.
Spiral Ribbon
Spiral ribbon is a modern twist on traditional tree trimming. Wrap a strand of wired ribbon around two fingers, creating a coil. When you reach the end, gently pull on the loose end to create a perfect ribbon coil. Use a bobby pin to attach it to a branch. For a more playful look, combine this method with the big bow cascade idea for a truly unique take on the Christmas tree ribbon.
Droopy Bows & Perky Bows
Whether you prefer the relaxed charm of droopy bows (with a relaxed velvet ribbon) or the lively pop of perky bows (using a stiff satin ribbon with more structure), both styles bring unique character to your tree. Choose one style or mix both to create a soft, vintage feel by tying small bows directly onto the branch tips. Tying bows on branches is a charming approach, perfect for adding a trendy touch to a minimally decorated tree, infusing warmth and whimsy in every bow. To easily reuse next year, tie each bow like a shoelace and secure an ornament hook at the back for easy hanging.
Three Baubles of Ribbon
Add a subtle ribbon accent to your tree with “three baubles of ribbon.” This look is created by making three loops of ribbon, attaching them at the ends, or leaving one end long with a fishtail cut for extra flair. Tuck these clusters into the tree branches for a soft, layered touch that enhances your tree’s texture and depth without overpowering it. Perfect for a hint of elegance in any color scheme.
Ribbon Ornament Accents
Give each ornament a personalized touch by swapping out the traditional hanger for a ribbon in an accent color of your choice. For a subtle look, tie the ribbon ends in a small knot, or go for a fuller effect with a bow. This simple change is an excellent way to introduce a new color scheme to your decor without fully investing in new ornaments.
What is the Best Christmas Tree Ribbon to Use?
There is no right or wrong ribbon to use on your Christmas tree. It largely depends on the technique you want to use to apply the ribbon. Certain styles require different types of ribbon each with unique textures, finishes, and uses.
- Grosgrain Ribbon: Known for its ribbed texture, this ribbon is sturdy and holds its shape well, ideal for making traditional hand-tied bows and wreath accents.
- Satin Ribbon: Smooth and glossy on one or both sides, satin ribbon adds elegance and works well for wrapping gifts, tying bows, and draping on Christmas trees.
- Organza Ribbon: Sheer and lightweight with a subtle shimmer, organza ribbon is great for delicate accents or layering with other ribbons. It is best thought of as a crinoline material. When bunched together it makes a larger poof.
- Velvet Ribbon: Luxurious and soft with a rich texture, velvet ribbon is perfect for achieving an elegant droop.
- Wired Ribbon: Contains a wire edge, making it easy to shape and manipulate. Wired ribbon is ideal for tree decorating, floral arrangements, and crafting bows that hold their shape.
- Burlap Ribbon: Rustic and textured, burlap ribbon adds a farmhouse or natural look. It pairs well with woodland or rustic Christmas themes. But be careful it also comes with an earthy smell that you might not be able to get past.
- Mesh Ribbon: Flexible, breathable, and often sparkly, mesh ribbon is excellent for creating voluminous tree decor or garland accents.
- Taffeta Ribbon: Crisp and smooth, taffeta ribbon has a slightly stiff texture, making it great for structured bows and does not stain as easily as a satin ribbon if you are putting it on a natural Christmas tree.
- Lace Ribbon: Delicate and intricate, lace ribbon adds a vintage or romantic touch and is beautiful when layered with solid ribbons.
Each ribbon brings its own style, allowing you to mix and match for the perfect look for your holiday decorating projects.

Tips For Choosing The Right Ribbon For Your Tree
- Complement Your Tree’s Theme: Choose colors and textures that fit with your overall holiday décor. If you prefer a natural tree, a soft textured ribbon like velvet or one made of a natural fibre may best suit your tree, if you want a full maximalist tree a wired ribbon that can provide more volume might be the right ribbon to enhance your tree’s aesthetic.
- Set a Budget: Ribbon prices can vary significantly, so it’s smart to choose a ribbon that fits comfortably within your budget. This way, you can purchase enough spools to fully decorate your tree without breaking the bank. Keep in mind you the narrower the ribbon, the more of it you will need to get an impactful look. Wider Ribbons you can get away with less since they cover more surface area.
- Start a New Color Scheme: If you’re looking to refresh your tree’s look, the ribbon is an excellent starting point. For around $20, you can invest in a new ribbon that complements your existing décor, giving your tree a whole new appearance.
- Consider Tree Size: The size of your tree will determine the width of the ribbon you should use. For trees under 7 feet tall, a 1-2 inch wide ribbon works well. However, for taller trees, opt for a 3-4 inch wide ribbon to ensure it doesn’t get lost among the branches.
- Consider Your Tree Type: If you have a real tree, keep in mind that tiny sap drips can stain delicate ribbons, so it’s best to use those as accents. For artificial trees, you can take advantage of the branches to stabilize your ribbon design and hold it in place. If you’re working with a natural tree, you might want to use bobby pins or pipe cleaners to secure your ribbon effectively.
- Mix Ribbon Widths: If you’re drawn to a narrow ribbon but want to maintain visual impact, consider pairing it with a wider ribbon. This combination can add depth and texture, making your tree even more eye-catching.
Materials Needed
- Christmas Ribbon: Choose a variety of widths, textures, and colors to match your theme.
- Sharp Scissors: For cutting the ribbon to your desired lengths.
- Bobby Pins: To secure the ribbon in place on the tree.
- Cable Ties: To secure big bows
- Pipe Cleaners: To secure smaller bows and attach to the tree. May want to coordinate the color with your ribbon.
How Many Inches of Christmas Tree Ribbon Do I Need?
The amount of ribbon you purchase depends on the ribbon type, width, and roll size. As a rough guide, for a 7′ tree decorated on three sides, you might typically buy 2-3 small spools or one large spool, totalling approximately 30-45 feet of ribbon (360-540″).
What to Do If You Can’t Find the Perfect Ribbon Style or Color
My best-kept Christmas decor secret is that ribbon on the spool isn’t always the answer. If you’re ok using non-wired ribbons you can make them yourself! I often buy a yard of fabric in the desired color and cut it into strips! You’ll get yards of ribbon for a fraction of the cost. Even better if you can upcycle something found at a second-hand shop. The blue weaved through the tree in the image below is lengths of satin fabric.

FAQ
Add the ribbon first! Starting with ribbon lets you shape the tree, fill gaps, and make sure it drapes beautifully from every angle. You can always tuck or adjust strands as you go. Once the ribbon is set, layer in your ornaments—this makes it easy to place fillers and smaller pieces around it for a balanced, cohesive look.

Most decorators secure the ribbon tightly, which can be a hassle to remove. Instead of securing it tightly, I use bobby pins to lightly attach the ribbon to tree branches. This method works well for both real and artificial trees. When it’s time to take down the decorations, the ribbon easily pulls off with the pin.
As mentioned earlier, I prefer to attach the ribbon to the tree in a way that can be easily removed. Typically, since the ribbons are cut into smaller strands, I coil each section around my hand and store them in a ziplock bag for the next season. If the ribbon is already made into bows, I store them in a larger bag or container for future use. When I retrieve the strands the following year, I uncoil each bundle and use a hair straightener on a low setting to unwrinkle the ribbons.
Creating professional ribbon ends requires a sharp pair of scissors. Fold the ribbon in half lengthwise and cut at a 45-degree angle, facing the outside ribbon tips towards the folded center. Unfolded, the ribbon end will resemble a fishtail. Alternatively, a single 45-degree angle also looks nice. If your ribbon is prone to fraying, you can take a lighter and quickly skim across the edge to prevent further fraying.
