What Are Dekton Countertops?
Dekton countertops are a modern surface material created by Cosentino, combining glass, porcelain, and natural quartz into high-quality slabs. Dekton’s manufacturing process uses advanced technology to replicate the high-pressure and high-temperature conditions that occur naturally over thousands of years. This method creates incredibly durable materials that mimic the strength and resilience of natural stone.
My Experience Choosing and Installing Dekton Countertops
When searching for the perfect countertop surface, I wanted something durable, stylish, and low maintenance. After considering my options, Dekton stood out—and I couldn’t be happier!
I love how classy and sophisticated it looks, and the non-porous material is a game changer with kids—it never stains! Plus, Dekton is one of the most scratch-resistant surfaces available, and despite all my kitchen projects, I’ve never seen a scratch. Another huge perk? No heat protection is needed! I can place hot pots directly on it, which also makes it a great choice for my fireplace surround.
The installation process was similar to quartz, but since Dekton is very heavy, be sure to clear a path for the installers. My only downside? The veining doesn’t go all the way through, though I find it’s less noticeable in darker or matte finishes compared to glossy white.
Overall, Dekton has been an incredible investment—it looks stunning, handles daily wear with ease, and makes my kitchen feel effortlessly high-end!
Advantages of Dekton Kitchen Countertops
The best part about using Dekton countertops in our home is it’s completely carefree! With a busy family like ours, we’re all about spills, messes, and the occasional chaotic moment. Our kitchen is the heart of our home, and we put it to work!
That’s why I love Dekton countertops. They’re incredibly durable, stain-resistant, and have high scratch resistance—everything I need to keep things simple and stress-free. If you’re looking for a countertop that can handle family life like a champ, Dekton is the way to go!

- Super scratch-resistant, no worries about scorching or burning
- Stands up to extreme heat and cold without cracking
- Non-porous and stain-resistant, so spills are no big deal
- UV-resistant to keep colours looking fresh and vibrant
- Comes in a variety of realistic colors and textures
- Versatile enough for counters, floors, bathrooms, fireplaces, and even siding—indoors or out!
The kitchen is the hub of our home, so I wanted and needed a surface that was durable, attractive, and above all timeless.
Durability and Resistance to Heat and Stains
After living with Dekton countertops, I can confidently say they’re one of the best choices I’ve made for my kitchen. Their durability is incredible—they stand up to daily wear and tear without a second thought. I love that I can pull a hot pan straight from the stove and set it down without worrying about damage. Plus, spills are no big deal! Whether it’s coffee, wine, or even my kids’ markers, everything wipes up easily. Unlike natural stone, which needs regular sealing, Dekton’s non-porous surface means it stays pristine with zero extra maintenance—a must for my busy kitchen!
Low Maintenance and Easy to Clean
How to Care for Your Dekton Countertops
Taking good care of your Dekton countertops can help them last longer and keep them looking fabulous. Here are some easy tips to remember:
- Clean up spills right away- It’s best to wipe them up with a damp cloth and mild detergent to prevent stains. While Dekton is stain-resistant it isn’t stain-proof. Things with high pigments like red wine, beets and curry could potentially stain if left for a long period.
- Skip the harsh cleaners- Avoid abrasive scrubbers that could scratch the surface, and cleaners with harsh chemicals. Steer clear of anything with bleach or ammonia.
- Use cutting boards- They’ll protect your countertops from unnecessary accidents and keep everything in tip-top shape.
- Be mindful of heavy objects- Even though Dekton is super durable, try not to use it as a cutting board or overload it with heavy items.
- Enjoy low maintenance- Dekton countertops require minimal upkeep compared to other materials like natural stone and you won’t need to worry about regular sealing.
With a little TLC, your countertops will look great for years to come!
What Are the Negatives of Dekton?
Despite its many advantages, there are a few considerations regarding Dekton countertops.
- The pattern (veins) is applied to the surface of the material rather than being integrated throughout. While the color remains consistent all the way through, the edge profile won’t feature the veining.
- Dekton countertops are pretty hefty, which can make installation a bit tricky and sometimes need extra support.
- They’re super scratch-resistant, but I’ll be honest—if something really heavy hits them, they can chip. That said, I’ve done plenty of DIY projects on my kitchen counters and have never had a chip.
- The cost of Dekton will be higher than some other kitchen counter options, even Silestone quartz countertops. It’s something to think about, especially when you’re working with a budget. It’s all about finding that balance between what you love and what you can afford!
- This may not be an issue for everyone, but I find the countertop a bit cold. When I lean on it for a while, I often place a tea towel under my arms to avoid the chill.
Choosing a Dekton Color
Dekton by Cosentino has always been popular for its wide array of different colours, that reflect the latest trends in design.
I was thrilled to explore these palettes when choosing my kitchen counters. My goal was to find a color with white undertones, and I’ve always adored the classic look of Carrara marble. I discovered Bergen from the Stonika collection—an elegant choice that gives me the aesthetic I love without the drawbacks of softer, more porous options.
The polished XGloss surface finish brings a high-end, ultra-crisp look to my kitchen. With a wide range of colors and design patterns, Dekton offers options to enhance any aesthetic. Whether you prefer the timeless look of natural stone which has been growing in popularity or a sleek modern solid, there’s a finish for every style.
I’ve since used Kelya from the natural collection for our office coffee station and meeting room coffee table and Lunar from the Industrial collection on our fireplace surround. I love how the material looks like a natural stone without the care and the ability to use it in a high-temperature area like a fireplace surround.

Dekton Comparison to Other Countertop Materials
When comparing Dekton to other popular materials like granite or quartz, its unique properties become evident. Unlike granite, or other natural stones which often require sealing, Dekton’s stain-resistant and non-porous surface simplifies maintenance. Compared to Silestone quartz countertops, Dekton offers superior heat resistance and scratch resistance, making it a fantastic choice for high-traffic areas and outdoor kitchens.

FAQ
Choosing between Dekton and quartz depends on your specific needs. Dekton excels in heat resistance and stain prevention, ideal for high-use environments. Conversely, quartz provides a wider variety of textures and patterns. If your priorities include durability and low maintenance, and your budget allows, Dekton may be the superior option for your home.
From my experience as a homeowner, Dekton tends to be one of the pricier options when it comes to man-made countertops. Its sister material, Silestone quartz, is comparable but usually a little more affordable. Of course, prices can vary depending on your location and the specific color you choose. I found it helpful to consult with a local dealer to get a clear idea of pricing and installation costs for both materials, making it easier to make a decision that fits my budget and design plans.
Dekton countertops are crafted from a blend of glass, porcelain, and natural quartz, compressed with advanced technology to form an ultra-durable, non-porous surface. Designed to rival the strength and resilience of natural stone, Dekton offers exceptional performance with minimal maintenance.

Amazing… Thank you share post
Hi! I’m about to press ‘go’ on installing the same Dekton worktop on my kitchen cabinets, island, utility room cabinets and maybe even the veneer as a splasback. Now that you’ve lived with yours in your BEAUTIFUL kitchen for a while, would you mind updating us on how it is going? Many thanks!
Hey Jane, it is going well. The ONLY negative I can say is it cold to the touch but otherwise perfect! You won’t be disappointed, especially for a worktop where accidents could happen, it is so durable.
Hello. We are remodeling our kitchen. Are you happy with the Bergen colored countertops?
Yes VERY happy. The only thing I can say is it is cold to the touch, but that’s small potatoes!
Hi Virginia…just wondering about the cost of this Dekton? Do you have any specifics on that? Or could you maybe give me somewhat of an idea of just the island even? Thanks!
Sorry I do not, it really varies depending on where you have it fabricated. The Home Depot offers it as well, so I’m sure you could get a basic square footage rate from there.
What color of white did you use for your kitchen cabinet to pair up with Dekton Bergen?
It is called Delicate White from PPG
We’re building a house and looking at Dekton for our kitchen counters/island. Have read a gazillion articles about it but hardly any reviews from actual users of the product. Writers often reference a Consumer Reports test in which the product cracked and chipped from objects being dropped from 2 feet onto the surface.
So, my question is: Have you found that it chips or cracks easily, particularly on edges and/or around sink edge?
Thanks!
No, I haven’t had any trouble. However, I no longer live in this home. My only complaint was that it is cold like to lean on, I put a tea towel down to put my arms on if they were bare. Otherwise, I loved everything about it!
Hi, I too am strongly leaning toward Dekton and was thrilled to see your posts. Would you install the, again, and what type of counter material did you choose for your new home 🏡? Hope you love your new home just as much as the one in the beautiful Annapolis Valley.
Hey, I loved the Dekton and have since used it in 3 other applications. However, my new home I went with Siletone Quartz which was a choice based on color and pattern less than the material in question.
Hello from Sweden!
What a lovely kitchen Virginia!
Could you please explain if the borders of the countertop is also coloured like a ususal stone OR if it is plain white?
Have a great week!
HI Karolina, The color does go straight through the stone, but the pattern does not. It is just applied to the top of the stone. I hope this helps. V
Hi, I’m looking at a Dekton top as well. Some have said with the 2″ mitered top, I can not do it with a farmhouse apron sink. I see you have a farmhouse sink. Was there any problems with that? They mentioned the back corners would not be curved but straight, which I don’t think that would look awful. Any thoughts on this?
The fabricators for this job didn’t have an issue with the farm sink. They did express that cutting the dekton is a bit more challenging and it is heavy for the installers, but they didn’t have a fabrication issue. Hope this helps, V
We have had Dekton countertops for 3 years. We loved them until they chipped from minimal impacts. I know my Corningware is tough, but I was shocked that it chipped the counters I have bragged about. We have two chips now and the warranty Dekton/Consentino has is garbage. I feel compelled to warn people so they aren’t in this terrible pickle we are in. Run from this product!
Thats a real shame you had this experience. I am honestly shocked, I haven’t had this experience at all. Dekton is supposed to be the most durable of them all. I would totally expect this from regualr quartz as it is prone to chipping more easily. Have you looked into having the chips filled?
