Are you dreaming of a white farmhouse kitchen that blends modern style with cozy warmth? Our recent kitchen remodel is packed with ideas to inspire your farmhouse kitchen design. From white cabinets and open shelves to a stunning farmhouse sink and brass accents, this transformation brings timeless charm to life.
Before and After: A Dramatic Kitchen Remodel
Our kitchen started as a dark, outdated space with heavy wood cabinets, storage that was not functional at all, and terrible lighting. After six weeks of hard work, we transformed it into a classic white farmhouse kitchen filled with warmth, functionality, and modern character.
The transformation wasn’t just cosmetic—we completely rethought the kitchen layout to maximize efficiency and create a natural flow. Removing upper cabinets on one wall opened up the space visually while adding the large island, which provided additional workspaces and a gathering spot for family and friends.
Key Design Features for a Modern Farmhouse Kitchen
White Shaker Cabinets:
Crisp, clean, and perfect for a modern farmhouse style. These timeless cabinets brighten the space and provide ample storage. We chose a soft white (Benjamin Moore’s Simply White) for a warm undertone that prevents the kitchen from feeling stark or clinical.
Dekton Countertops:
Durable and low-maintenance, this surface is both practical and stylish. The marble-look pattern adds subtle texture without overwhelming the space. Read my Dekton Countertop Review.
White Subway Tile Backsplash:
A classic touch that adds texture and depth to the kitchen design. We selected a slightly handcrafted version with subtle variations that give dimension when light hits the white backsplash surface. A subway tile is perfect for maintaining your budget and adding timeless appeal.
Open Shelves:
Perfect for displaying vintage finds and adding character to the space. For a curated look, group items in threes and include a mix of materials like glass, metal, and wood. We installed brass brackets to support our open shelving, adding an extra touch of warmth.
Farmhouse Sink:
A spacious, deep sink that brings functionality with farmhouse charm. We chose a fireclay model for its durability and authentic look—the exposed front becomes a beautiful focal point in our farmhouse-style kitchen. Positioned in a corner sink layout, it maximizes counter space and adds a unique design element to the room.
Pendant Lights:
Oversized globe pendants create a focal point above the white kitchen island and complement the farmhouse decor. The brass fixtures add warmth while the white globes maintain the bright, airy feel.
Navy Blue Island:
While keeping the perimeter cabinets white, we selected a deep navy blue (Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy) for the island to create a striking contrast and anchor the space. This blue kitchen island adds depth and character, making it a standout feature with our otherwise white kitchen cabinets. I love this kitchen with a white and navy combo shared on Style Me Pretty which was so inspiring.
Mid-Tone Wood Flooring:
Provides warmth and contrast against the bright white cabinetry. We chose hardwood with a matte finish that’s both durable and beautiful.
Brass Accents:
The Champagne Bronze hardware ties the design together with a hint of vintage elegance. We extended this finish to the light fixtures for a cohesive look.

Smart Storage Solutions for Kitchen Functionality
No farmhouse kitchen is complete without thoughtful storage solutions. We incorporated several features that maximize space while maintaining a clean aesthetic:
Pull-out Spice Racks: Hidden beside the range, these slim cabinets keep cooking essentials organized and accessible.
Custom Drawer Organizers: Wooden dividers keep utensils, cutting boards, and bakeware neatly arranged.
Pantry with Sliding Barn Doors: I had my heart set on a walk-in pantry, but there just wasn’t enough space in the floor plan. Instead, we added a pantry with small sliding doors that still provide a generous amount of storage. The adjustable shelves accommodate items of various heights. This clever design also allowed us to tuck away a few small appliances, like the microwave, to keep the countertops clutter-free.
Large Drawer Storage: To maximize functionality, we included large drawers designed specifically to hold pots, pans, and other bulky cookware. These deep drawers make accessing heavy items easy while keeping everything neatly organized.
Dining Room Makeover with Farmhouse Charm
Our dining room received a cozy yet fresh upgrade that blends modern farmhouse elements with inviting textures. I wanted to be able to sit at the table and bring in the farm fields without obstructing the view.
Stationary drapes added texture without the hassle of moving pieces for an alcove window. A statement chandelier adds warmth and character to the space. By combining these elements, the dining room now feels bright and modern while still maintaining a classic farmhouse vibe.
To extend the modern farmhouse aesthetic, I added a wainscotting detail on the walls and painted it in two contrasting colors for added charm. Adding shiplap, beadboard, or a wainscotting detail is a great way to introduce texture and visual interest to your space, especially when exploring farmhouse kitchen ideas. For inspiration, check out my guides on vertical shiplap and beadboard paneling styles to find the perfect look for your kitchen.
Breezeway Refresh for a Modern Farmhouse Look
The breezeway, once dull and beige, now boasts Jeffrey Court Allegro Fan Tile paired with fresh trim work and a sleek light fixture. This modern update keeps the space feeling light and fresh, seamlessly blending with the rest of the home’s new look. See the full-color farmhouse palette here.
Designer Tip: Mix Metals for a Balanced Look
While I originally envisioned all champagne bronze accents, the stainless steel appliances create a balanced mix of metals that feels both modern and inviting. This blend adds depth to the kitchen design without feeling overly coordinated. Pairing stainless steel with warm brass tones is a fantastic way to achieve a balanced, stylish result.
The key is to be intentional with your metal choices. We used brass for all the “jewelry” of the kitchen—hardware, lighting, and fixtures—while keeping appliances in stainless steel. This creates a hierarchy that guides the eye naturally through the space.
Incorporating Vintage Elements for Authentic Farmhouse Style
True farmhouse style celebrates history and patina. We incorporated several vintage elements to add soul to our modern kitchen:
Antique Cutting Boards: Displayed on open shelves, these pieces add warmth and character.
Vintage Crock Collection: Repurposed as utensil holders, these earthenware pieces bring authentic farmhouse charm.
Ceiling Beams: Although there was already one beam that was a functional wrapped header, I added a false beam to balance the space and painted it white to coordinate with the rest of the kitchen.
Heirloom Accessories: Incorporating family pieces like grandmother’s rolling pin or vintage cookbooks adds personal history to the space.
Budget-Friendly Farmhouse Kitchen Updates
Not everyone can afford a complete kitchen renovation. Here are some affordable ways to incorporate farmhouse style into your existing kitchen:
- Paint Existing Cabinets: A fresh coat of white paint can transform dark cabinets for a fraction of the cost of replacement.
- Update Hardware: Switching out cabinet handles and knobs to brass or black iron instantly adds farmhouse character.
- Add a Backsplash: White subway tile is affordable and can be installed over a weekend by a DIY enthusiast.
- Replace Lighting: New pendant lights above an island or sink make a big impact without major construction.
- Install Open Shelving: Remove a few upper cabinets and replace with simple wood shelves for an instant farmhouse feel.
Creating a Timeless Farmhouse Kitchen
If you’re planning a white kitchen remodel, consider these tips to achieve a farmhouse aesthetic:
- Stick to a neutral colour scheme with pops of color to keep the space feeling fresh. We used green plants and blue accents to add life to our predominantly white kitchen.
- Incorporate white shaker cabinets for a clean, timeless look. This cabinet style has remained popular for decades and works beautifully in farmhouse designs.
- Use wooden beams, mid to dark wood floors, or warm textiles to add warmth and prevent the space from feeling sterile.
- Opt for open shelves to display everyday items in a functional yet decorative way. This breaks up expanses of white cabinetry and adds personality.
- Choose countertops wisely. While marble countertops are beautiful, practical alternatives like quartz countertops or Dekton offer similar aesthetics with better durability.
- Introduce vintage-inspired décor like mason jars, woven baskets, and rustic wood elements to reinforce the farmhouse feel.
- Consider a statement range hood in wood to serve as a focal point against white cabinetry.
Seasonal Styling for Your Farmhouse Kitchen
One of the joys of a neutral farmhouse kitchen is how easily it adapts to seasonal changes. Here are some ideas for each season:
- Spring: Fresh flowers in mason jars, potted herbs on windowsills, and lightweight linen towels in soft pastels.
- Summer: Bowls of fresh fruit, blue and white ceramics, and open windows with simple white curtains billowing in the breeze.
- Fall: Copper accents, dried wheat arrangements, and warm-toned textiles like rust or amber.
- Winter: Evergreen branches, white ceramic houses, and cozy cable-knit textures for warmth.

Maintaining Your White Farmhouse Kitchen
A white kitchen requires some maintenance to keep it looking its best. Here are some tips for keeping your space pristine:
- Daily Cleaning: Wipe down surfaces with a mild cleaner to prevent stains from setting.
- Cabinet Care: Use a soft cloth with gentle soap and water for regular cleaning. Avoid abrasive products that can damage the finish.
- Countertop Maintenance: Follow manufacturer recommendations for sealing (if necessary) and avoid harsh chemicals.
- Farmhouse Sink Care: Rinse thoroughly after use and periodically apply a protective wax to fireclay or porcelain sinks. I love Bar Keepers Friend to keep mine looking pristine.
- Unlacquered Brass Hardware: Use a specialized brass cleaner to maintain shine, or allow it to develop a natural patina for an aged look.
FAQs About White Farmhouse Kitchens
When choosing a color for your farmhouse kitchen, classic neutrals are always a safe bet. Soft whites, warm greys, and muted greens create a cozy yet timeless feel. For a curated selection of ideal farmhouse hues, check out my guide to the Modern Farmhouse Color Palette for inspiration.
Absolutely not! White kitchens remain a popular choice in 2025 due to their clean, bright, and timeless appeal. While trends may shift toward warmer tones or natural wood accents, white kitchens continue to offer a fresh and versatile backdrop that suits both modern and farmhouse styles. Pairing white cabinetry with contrasting elements like a blue kitchen island or wood accents can keep your space feeling updated and inviting.
The key difference between white and farmhouse white lies in the depth and warmth of the color. Farmhouse white often has softer undertones, introducing a hint of warmth that feels more inviting and less stark than pure white. For a list of my favorite timeless white paint colors, visit my guide on The Best Kitchen Cabinet Colors for a Timeless Look.
The best materials for a white farmhouse sink are typically fireclay and cast iron.
• Fireclay sinks are highly durable, resistant to scratches and stains, and have a smooth, glossy finish that complements a farmhouse aesthetic beautifully.
• Cast iron sinks are equally durable and offer a classic enamel finish, but they are heavier and may require additional cabinet reinforcement.
Both options provide lasting durability and are excellent choices for achieving that timeless farmhouse kitchen look.

Love love love, what an awesome transformation!!
You win! Good work, as always.
Thanks Cody!
This is absolutely stunning Virginia! I can’t believe it’s the same kitchen. Amazing job!!
WOW! This is absolutely spectacular! Thanks for sharing and good luck with the challenge.
Thank you Claudine!!
It is lovely…good job! Have to ask, is stove down draft vented?
The home has a venmar system in the kitchen, so it isn’t completely neccessary. Thank you for visiting
Lovely job! Love how you used the tile in the entryway above. Just curious as to why you chose not to use an exhaust fan over the stove? Neat design choice.
Thank you, Considering the timeline I didn’t have time to get the electrical reworked to put one there. The house has a venmar system for exhaust in the ceiling anyhow so it wasn’t completely necessary.
LOVED following along with this Virginia! What an incredible transformation! It turned out SO beautifully!!!
Thank you Kristi, It was a lot of quick work, but I’m so happy how everything came together.
Virginia,
I Love it! Your kitchen is the perfect example of why we sell so many fireclay farmhouse sinks! Such a smart way to maximize space. 6 gruelling weeks but clearly worth the effort. The these types of post coming.
Cheers From the Annie & Oak team!
Thank you very much for visiting! I love our sink, perfect for our space!
