Easy Hand Painted Wood Sign Tutorial
Hand painted wood signs have been all the craze since the wood pallet movement. You all know I’ve fallen victim to it too. I’ve shared a few of my own pallet creations like the Lucky sign and Irish sign.
If you’ve ever tackled a pallet sign project you know how much work it is, ripping, cutting, hammering… I had to find a quicker solution, especially one that could be done with leaving the tools in the cabinet. When I stumbled upon a $3 cutting board at the dollar store I knew my prayer had been answered!
Last month when I was in Utah I had the opportunity to visit the home of Hazel and Ruby (a craft company that offers a variety of products to help you easily create awesome DIY projects, with a sweet vintage touch). The folks there were so nice they sent me home with a few supplies to try out, including two packs of stencil masks (Greeting Words, and Boutique Alpha) which are now available at Michaels.
I wanted to create a totally unique project and these stencils made it SO easy. You could make 50 wooden signs in a snap with these stencils, you can wipe them clean and use over and over again!
Follow this Painted Wood Sign Tutorial to make your own
Simply peel the letters or shape from the plastic backing, arrange your letters on the cutting board as desired (I didn’t press them in place until I knew they were centred and evenly spaced), press in place, paint overtop using acrylic paint (I used a sample pot of County Chic Paint), peel the letters from the cutting board, I used a pointed craft knife to lift the edge. Wipe the letters clean with a damp cloth and return to the plastic backing.
You can see the letters lift of with almost no bleeding!

I added some We R Memory Keepers Enamel Dots to the middle of the cutting board sign to break up the phrase, the cool coral coordinates perfect.
I love how this wooden sign turned out, you can hardly tell it was a cutting board in its former life.
Wouldn’t it be a fun sign for a shop? But my family is kinda awesome so we’re displaying it proudly.

This sign is great, I think I need one too! The Hazel and Ruby stencils look so easy to use, I think I could even do this.

Hi! I love the sign, and the use of sticker letters and words…the possibilities are reallyyy Endless!! I just had a question, though! I have read many a tutorials and learned the hard way, that you should take the tape (when taping words, shapes, or even edges you do not want painted) off while the paint is still wet, or damp, because the paint will peel up with the tape. I was wondering if you did 2 coats of paint, and when you peeled the letters off…it looks like they came off soooo easy, and I have had problems with my paint peeling up with my painters tape =/ Esp if I needed 2 coats. Thanks for posting the great tutorial! And, thanks in advance for/if answering my questions! Have a great Holiday weekend and happy crafting! =)
Hey Marsha, Thanks for stopping by! I did take the letters off while the sign was still semi wet, that way I could wipe the letters off to use again. And I applied two coats of paint, but almost back to back, with only about 15 mins dry time between them. These stencils are incredibly easy to use! Have a great last weekend of summer!

Question… what size of wood (thickness more so) do you use regularly for your signs?? We have lots of scraps left (hooray for home renovations) but wonder and worry some may be too thick? Thanks!
Honestly, I use scraps. I just try to make it work, if its really thick I set it on a vignette rather than hanging it on the wall. This project is a cutting board to the weight was perfect for hanging on the wall. The stencils are really great, so easy to use!
