How to Decorate Kitchen Cabinets for Christmas
When it comes to decorating kitchen cabinets for Christmas, less is often more. You want to bring in the holiday spirit without making the space feel cluttered or impractical for everyday use.
Start with a few small wreaths, matching ribbons, or decorative bows across your cabinets. Add a larger wreath on your range hood or pantry door for a pretty focal point. If your cabinets don’t reach the ceiling, try adding a garland with twinkle lights above — it’s a great way to fill unused vertical space while keeping things festive and cozy.
Designer Tip: If you hang wreaths on your kitchen windows, duplicate them on the exterior so they look equally lovely from outside. This little detail adds so much charm and curb appeal!

Choose A Festive Color Scheme
Choosing a color palette early on helps your Christmas cabinet decor look cohesive with the rest of your home. Classic red and green always feel joyful, but I also love experimenting with metallics, soft neutrals, or pastel tones like pink and mint for a whimsical look.

Before decorating, give your cabinets a good clean — a quick wipe with vinegar and water helps ribbons and hooks stick better (and trust me, your garland will thank you later).
Mini Wreaths Or Garlands for Cabinets
Hanging small wreaths on cabinet doors is one of the easiest ways to create charming Christmas cabinet decor.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Mini wreaths or small garlands
- Ribbon or twine
- Command hooks or painter’s tape
Attach an upside-down Command hook to the inside of your cabinet door, loop the ribbon over the top, and hang the wreath for a seamless look. If your wreaths are lightweight, adhesive strips or a small dab of hot glue on the ribbon can also work.
Designer Tip: Fresh greenery smells amazing, but it doesn’t last long on cabinets since doors are constantly opened and closed. For longevity, opt for faux greenery and mix in dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, or tiny ornaments for a natural touch.
Adding Ribbon for a Polished Look
Ribbon is one of my favorite ways to personalize Christmas cabinet decor — and it’s an easy project anyone can do!
The key is choosing a ribbon that complements your kitchen’s holiday palette. You can hang wreaths with wide satin ribbon or use thinner ribbon to wrap cabinet doors like presents.
For step-by-step tips, see my post Christmas Tree Ribbon Ideas: Easy Ways to Add Ribbon to Your Tree the same techniques work beautifully for cabinets, too.
Pro Tip: Use painter’s tape to secure the ribbon to the back of the door — it holds well without leaving marks. For heavier materials, wrap the ribbon around the entire door and secure it on the back with tape or a discreet glue dot.
If you love a full, elegant bow, try using a Bowdabra or EZ-Bow Maker. Or for a quick DIY bow, coil a ribbon, cut angled ends, tie the center with a smaller piece, and fan it out — simple and beautiful!
Adding Warm Glow Lighting
A soft glow is what makes your kitchen feel magical at night.
Try weaving micro fairy lights or battery-operated candles around garlands and wreaths to create gentle, twinkling light. If you prefer a subtle look, place a flameless candle at the center of a cabinet wreath — it’s cozy, safe, and adds instant charm.
Designer Tip: Warm white lights blend beautifully with both modern and traditional Christmas styles. Avoid bright white LEDs, which can feel harsh against natural cabinetry tones.

How Do You Put Christmas Ribbon on Kitchen Cabinets?
Adding ribbon to your kitchen cabinets is a charming, customizable way to bring Christmas spirit into the heart of your home. Here’s how to do it:
- Attaching Ribbons- The best method I’ve found for attaching Christmas ribbons to kitchen cabinets is painter’s tape on the back of the cabinet door. Invest in high-quality tape for a secure hold that lasts all season. If you want to attach a ribbon bow to the front, a small bead of hot glue works well. Adding a small pin in the door panel’s crack also gives extra security. For heavier or textured ribbons, consider wrapping the ribbon completely around the door and securing the ends together with hot glue—just be careful to avoid getting glue on the door itself.
- Choosing the Right Ribbon – Unique ribbons that coordinate with your holiday decor can easily refresh your kitchen’s look each year. This is an affordable way to update your style, especially as trends and color schemes change. A wider ribbon, around 2-3 inches, is ideal for hanging wreaths or bows in place and keeps them from flipping over when you open the cabinets.

Other Creative Christmas Cabinet Decor Ideas
If you want to go beyond wreaths and ribbons, here are some other fun, festive ideas to try:
- Hanging Ornaments on Ribbon – Attach shatterproof ornaments with ribbons to create a cascading effect down cabinet doors.
- Mistletoe Ball or Pinecone – Attach a mistletoe ball or a pinecone to a ribbon and let it dangle from a cabinet for a playful, classic touch.
- Wrapping Paper Panels – For a budget-friendly option, make your cabinets look like Christmas presents by wrapping just the inner panel. Simply measure the panel, cut your wrapping paper to size, and use painter’s tape folded back on itself to adhere it, no need to work around the hardware!
TIP: I used glossy wrapping paper, which created a reflection from the nearby windows. For a more subtle look, consider using matte wrapping paper instead.
- Cascading Wreaths – If you have tall pantry-style doors, hang two or three wreaths vertically with ribbon loops connecting them. It’s an elegant, high-impact look that’s surprisingly simple to do.
- DIY Paper Bows & Cardboard Wreaths –

Creating a Festive Kitchen Atmosphere
Beyond the cabinets themselves, think about how all your decorations come together to make your kitchen feel warm and welcoming.
A few of my favorite finishing touches include:
- Holiday kitchen linens and tea towels
- A small vase of greenery or branches with red berries
- Tiered trays filled with festive mugs, cookies, and cocoa toppings
- Vintage-style décor (like thermoses, Santa figurines, or mini Christmas trees)

Designer Tip: Scents matter! Simmer oranges, cinnamon sticks, and cloves on the stove for a cozy, inviting aroma that complements your festive kitchen decor.
