Basement Bunk Room Ideas
I first began working on the bunk room during fall ORC. Due to delays for materials, in and out of lockdown, selling a business, we just couldn’t keep the momentum up, so we picked away at it when we could.
Basement Bunk Room Before
They say slow and steady wins the race, I agree on this one, look how far the bunk room room has come!
We separated the long room into two spaces to create a master bedroom and a kids bedroom.
The Bunk Beds
Creating a basement bunk room was the perfect solution for maximizing sleeping space. If the beds were doubled up, this one room could sleep a cozy family of 5!
I’m definitely a kid at heart when it comes to bunk beds. You’re never too old to call top bunk eh?!
I couldn’t resist building in cute cubby holes to hold little treasures and easy to reach pull chain lights for a bit of playfulness.
Leftover Jeffrey Court tiles from the basement kitchen renovation were the perfect material to create the wall niche and shelf for each bunk bed. A tiled area means no damage from leaky water bottles and inevitable kid dirt.
The Bunk Room Big Bed
It was a back and forth deciding if were going to have a big bed in the basement bunk room. I wanted the bunk room to be a playful escape, but adding the queen means that two couples could potentially use the rental. The bright Bungalow Rose bedding (Canadian source) made the room so playful and now can accommodate adults too!
The Rainbow Shiplap Wall
The basement walls were in rough shape after the flood. Half of the drywall needed to be removed from water damage. Shiplap from Interbois was the perfect solution to make this room beautiful.

I hand cut a piece of shiplap with a jig saw to create the scallop trim. I must admit, even the rainbow shiplap wall was a happy surprise for me. After deciding to cut a scallop trim I still wanted another element to break up the white walls.
Interbois also makes these incredible wood doors. I chose to have mine factory primed to paint a colour that would coordinate with the shiplap. I painted out the shiplap, doors and trim in Sico- Natural White 6000-11. The Golden Select vinyl plank floor is the perfect backdrop for all the bright colours.

To complement the other gold accents in the room, I chose a knurled brass knob with a modern rosette backplate from Emtek. Not only are these contemporary privacy knobs gorgeous, but they are also so well made, the sheer visual weight of them tells you they are a special piece.
There is no doubt you can make a basement into a fun and inviting vacation rental the whole family is certain to enjoy!
Thank you so much for following along with the entire basement bunk room process. It was a long road to get here, but Im so happy where it is at!
