Last weekend my niece got married at our cottage on the lake. It was a wonderful day; perfect weather, yummy food, good friends, and most importantly a beautiful bride. I can’t take much credit when it came to the beautiful part but I did play a little DIY magic, making some handmade wedding bouquets with Costco Flowers… yes Costco!
These young lovebirds are just starting out, so my family pulled together and really made this sweet country wedding go off without a hitch.
I’m no florist, these bouquets were actually the first I have ever made. They came together so easily I’m sure you could make flower arrangements too!
There are a handful of good tutorials on making your own bouquets like this one from Real Simple, and this DIY Wedding Bouquets tutorail offers some great tips too.
For just under $80 my sister in law and I were able to make a large bouquet for the bride, 3 bouquets for the bridesmaids, 1 for the flower girl, 4 boutonnieres for the groom/groomsmen, 5 mother/grandmother corsages, and 7 additional boutonnieres for fathers, grandfathers, brothers and ushers.
Thats 21 flower arrangements!! Can we say cheap flowers?!
What We Used to Create the Bouquets
- 1 bunch of Hydrangea (4 heads)
- 1 bouquet of coral roses (24)
- 1 bunch of yellow button chrysanthemums
- 1 bunch of white freesia
- 1 bunch of white lilies
- 1 roll of floral tape
- Elastics that came on the stems of the bouquets
- Sharp knife and cutting board, or garden shears
- Ribbon and stick pins
We used the bulk of the flowers in the bride and bridesmaids bouquets, but the leftovers we easily created into corsages and boutonnieres.
It was perfect having some Faux Burlap May Arts Ribbon on hand. I simply singed the cut edges and hot glued (low temp) around the flower stems. They held fine on the lapel using two standard pearl head stick pins from the dollar store.
To keep the flowers fresh I put them in mason jars with the plant food that comes with the bouquets (the DIY wood caddy I built at mother’s Day came in handy) and placed them in the fridge overnight.
I was really hoping the lilies would open up a bit before wedding time, but they still looked pretty closed, and the wedding party was able to enjoy the bouquets of flowers for days after the wedding.
Who knew wholesale flowers could turn into such pretty wedding flower arrangements.
We couldn’t have asked for a better day to unite these two young love birds, congratulations Nicole and Kyle!
