Make Me: Reusable Snack Bag

Hey Mommas! Are you getting set for your little ones (or big ones) to return to school?  My little Ruby will be heading off to pre-school this September, she couldn’t be more excited. For me, the reality of packing up lunches and snacks for the next 13 years is starting to set in. I decided she would of course need some lunch bag accessories, like these super cute reusable snack bags. These little bags are great for the environment, and no worries of little fingers stumbling over fidgety packaging. I actually have this image of a stressed out teacher opening 30 lunch snacks, while she really needs to go to the washroom!

These bags will take only a few minutes to make and only about $2 in supplies.

You will need:

-Fabric, cut 5” wide x 12”long

-Plastic table covering (available at the fabric or hardware store) cut the same size as fabric.

-Velcro (I used low pile, so it is easy open)

-Basic sewing notions

Cut fabric and plastic to size, (if you want to make larger size bags Cotton Bottom has created a size chart). Pin wrong sides together and sew a ¼” seam around the parameter, leaving one end open. Flip right side out. Fold under open edge (add a snippet of ribbon if desired), and sew closed.  Add Velcro strips. Fold bag end up, leaving a small flap for closing.  Sew edges together. Fill your reusable snack bag with yummy treats! I wouldn’t recommend putting your bags in the dryer, but they are totally washable!

What will we be filling our reusable snack bags with? Mott’s Fruitsations +Veggie snacks. These snacks are VERY delicious, and they have ‘hidden’ veggies that your little one won’t even notice! They actually aren’t hard to open at all, but with a reusable bag I don’t need to stress about littering too. The yummy fruity flavours are exactly what your little one is after! To my surprise these snacks are naturally flavoured. I was happy to find that the first 3 ingredients were actually fruit and veggie juice, not sugar! This is one packaged snack I’m happy my kids enjoy.  In the words of my oldest child (a.k.a. my husband) “these are the most enjoyable, soft, fruit snacks ever!”

  1. Great idea! I’m sharing this with my friends. 🙂

    1. Just a few straight lines, I think you could handle it- a Great beginner project!

  2. Love this tutorial. But keep in mind the plastic table covering is not food-safe.

  3. Another way to do these is to use PUL fabric. It’s waterproof, washable, and holds up really well to washing. It’s traditionally used to make diapers. Using this fabric would eliminate the need to add plastic to the cotton. And PUL comes in a variety of adorable prints and solid colors. 🙂
