These Christmas stockings are the perfect beginner project, they are easy to sew and don’t require any fancy supplies.

Print out the Free Stocking Pattern

I took this free stocking pattern to a print shop and had it printed on a 11×17″ piece of paper (right click, save image as).  Either print two copies or trace the toe and heel onto a scrap of paper to make those pattern pieces.

1. Fold the main fabric in half, trace the stocking pattern onto the wrong side, then cut out the pattern pieces. Repeat with the white broadcloth. You should have 2 pieces of the main fabric, and two of the broadcloth.

2. Iron interfacing to the back of the Muslin approximately the size of the toe and heel. Trace toe and heel pattern onto fabric and cut out (this will give these small pieces a bit of stability, and make your stockings hang well).

2. Serge or zig zag the raw edge of the inside curve of each. Iron under, and align with the toe and heel. Top stitch in place.

3. Place broadcloth right sides together on top of the main fabric and stitch along the top with 1/4″ seam. Repeat with the front and backside of the stocking.

Sew the stocking pieces together

4. Unfold and press the fabric.

5. If you choose to add trim details to the stocking, you should apply it at this step before moving to the next step. I simply pressed a long strip of muslin into pleats, pinned it on, and stitched down the centre. Then added a cotton bow detail.

6. To add a hanger onto the stocking cut a 5″ strip of ribbon. Fold in half and place diagonally with the cut end facing the raw edge, at the top of the stocking.

7. Sandwich all layers together with right sides facing, pin and serge around the parameter. Alternatively, if you do not have a serger you can follow this method from Diary of a Quilter, her method rocks!

8. Flip and press seams flat. Viola, beautiful Christmas stockings!

Stockings Personalized the Easy Way

To easily make these personalized Christmas stockings I cut tags from a scrap piece of meranti board I had and painted them with grey craft paint.  A little scuff with sandpaper around the edges gave a perfect distressed look. I then cut 4×6 black and white photos down to size and Mod Podged them directly to the wood tags. (If you’ve never used Mod Podge, check out this tutorial).

A simple piece of crochet ribbon allows you to tie the photo tags to the stocking loop, making the perfect personalized Christmas decoration.

Each year I simply switch the ribbon or hang a collection of ornaments to coordinate with my Christmas decorations.
