There are lots of sweet hairdo ideas out there for your little one. Let’s be real… your girl is sweet with a giant bow of hair, but school days aren’t for hair masterpieces. Most importantly fancy hairdos just don’t stay in!

Watch this quick video how to put in these quick school day hairstyles.

I came up with these and tested these School Day Hair Styles. Each one is easy to do, and quick (to help with the morning time crunch)!

Hair Tips for Little Girls

  • Treat the hair as two sections, front and back. Pulling hair into a ponytail is easy, but by the end of the day, she’ll come home looking like there was a hair massacre.
  • For successful stay in hair you will need- no slip elastics in various sizes, a standard and fishtail comb, and Goody brand barrettes for young girls.
  • At the end of the day use small scissors to cut out the no slip elastics. This will prevent breaking delicate hairs and save a lot of tears.
  • To master these easy hair dos you don’t need many skills but I would suggest learning to do a basic 3 strand braid. I personally find a french braid stay in best, but it takes a bit more time to do/learn.
  • Brush long hair out before bed. There may be a few small snarls when she wakes up, but having the biggest part of the battle somewhat smooth will make your morning routine much easier in the AM… trust me.

5 Minute Hairstyles for School

Start with the basic foundation:

Part the hair evenly and tie the front of the hair into two small pigtails. Tie all the hair back into a ponytail. A pony at the nape of the neck stays in best.

Next up is braid pigtails with barrettes, this is our go to quick do. Best suited for non hat days, as the front can get fly aways.

A simple modification to the pigtail braids is to use small claw barrettes to clip them up. My daughter feels like a princess with this hair style.

From the foundation font, pick up small sections of hair and tie back, working down the length of the hair. This hairdo is the best for under a winter hat.

Easily modify this hairdo by braiding the tail.

Lets start with the basic foundation hairdo- part the hair evenly and tie the front of the hair into two small pigtails. Tie back into a ponytail. Nape of the neck stays in best. |5 Minute Hairstyles by popular Canada lifestyle blog, Fynes Designs: image of a braid ponytail hairstyle.

Next, try braiding the small front pieces, secure with an elastic, then tie the braid strands in a knot and pull back into a ponytail. Feel free to remove the braid elastics at this point.

Braid the end, for a different look. Notice a pattern?

Skip the middle man and go right into a braid.

Try criss-crossing the front sections of hair to create an ‘X’ in the back. Very simple trick and yet looks like you spent loads of time on it.

Tip: Have a claw clip handy to hold the hair you’re not working with to the side.

Then braid the pigtails for a moderation!

Part the front of the hair into 3 sections rather than two.  From here you can try any of the above hairdos and again achieve a different look.

Thing 2 is growing her hair out and I am always encouraging her to try her own hair styling. These would work well!

    1. Thanks, I’m trying to teach her how to do her own. Her hair is a bit to long to tackle on her own yet!

  4. Great ideas! I used a few of these when my daughter was competing in gymnastics. Minimal hair movement required when competing! The three small ponty tails to a larger one was her first competition hair!

    1. Thanks Claudine, I love when she comes home from school with hair like she left, no movement is key!

  5. Your daughter was such a fantastic model through all of this! I have been doing my daughters hair 3 different ways and I am so tired of them… she has curly hair, so I like to do something with it to keep it out of her face. These are all great, pinning!

    1. We kinda got stuck in that rut of the same do over again. These have most of the same idea, but a little spin on each. My daughter was certainly a good sport, there may have been a treat reward involved!

    1. So glad to hear! I hate when my daughter comes home looking like she has a mop on her head! Happy back to school!

  8. Thanks for these. Ive actually done a few of these before finding your post. I find putting a drop or two of scented oil or even baby oil to some water helps not only keep hair in place and stop the dreaded nits. Look forward to trying the cross over braid.

  9. Thank you so much for taking the time to share these with us hair-challenged mommies of the world!!
Unfortunately, I wasn’t given the gift of hair styling & my beautiful little girl has been deprived of cute hairstyles, through her eight years of life, because of it. She loves the look of her hair being french braided, even though she hates the near torture I cause to actually accomplish it, but still asks me to do it often. However, she usually only receives a yes for special events or if we successfully plan it out well enough to be able to give me a couple of hours for all the re-do’s I have to do before I succeed, and even then, it usually turns out looking messy and loose & lasts only a few hours, if lucky. Many times, we don’t even make it there because one of us just gets too impatient, frustrated or bored after numerous failed attempts & just gives up. Sadly, what should be an enjoyable precious time together of mother/daughter bonding, usually just turns out to be unenjoyable, frustrating torture for one or both of us & just ends up reminding us of why we go so long avoiding it.

I’m so bad at doing hair, that I only wear my hair straight down or pulled back quickly in a messy bun… And my daughter has only had 3 basic styles in pretty much all 8 years of her life, straight down, in a ponytail & clipping the bangs to the side… How boring….! Sadly enough, it’s all I’ve managed to master in all these years of being a female, how’s that even possible?!… Horrible mommy guilt going on right now, as I’m sure you can tell!! She just has such beautiful long hair & is really starting to be more concerned with her appearance & her hair looking cute, for the boys at school I suspect, so I’m trying to make it my top priority to make time to learn & get better at it, which I honestly wish I would’ve done many years ago for her. But, better late than never, I guess!!

So, thank you very much for sharing these!! They look & seem like they should be fast & simple enough hairstyles, for even horribly hair-challenged mommies like me, to attempt & succeed at, probably for the first time ever!!

I imagine there’s gotta be many cute-hair deprived little girls out there like mine who would love to thank you for teaching their hair-challenged mommies how to do some cute, easy hairstyles so they don’t have to continue through life with oh-so-plain-lookin-hair anymore or having to sit through long, boring torturous attempts at getting a cute Do!!!

I’m excited to attempt most of them this week! I plan on showing them to her later & letting her choose her fav one to begin the week with tomorrow. I may even try talking her into letting me practice tonight just to be on the safe side.

Thanks again!! We appreciate you very much and I’m sure many more do as well!!! God Bless!!

    1. I grew up in a house with 6 girls and my daughter had long hair from the start. Hair doing was just a regular thing for me! So happy you’re going to give them a try! V
